About Us

Cable Porter was founded by a Usability Engineer, a Musician, and an Audio Engineer.  What are their names?  Douglas Potts, Douglas Potts, and Douglas Potts.

Doug studied Music Engineering at the University of Miami, being one of the first 5 graduates of that program.  Even then, he realized there was no really good way to wrap and store cables.  But he had other things on his mind.

After stints at studios in NY and Orlando, Doug went back to school to earn his Master's in Cognition and Neuroscience, focusing on Human Computer Interface design.  In the meantime, he started doing sound again for his friends in local bands, then joined a couple of them himself.

During tear downs after rehearsals and gigs, band-mates and friends would wrap the cables.  Then during the next setup, many of those cables would turn into spaghetti when they were unwrapped.  All because the cable ends would pass through the coils.

So, in 2016, he bought a 3D printer, and began making the first of over 50 different prototypes, trying to solve this problem.  Putting his usability skills to work, he'd design, then build, then test, then redesign, then rebuild, then retest, then...well, you get the idea.

Once a working prototype was created, he and the manufacturing engineer started making the necessary changes to the design, in order to accommodate the manufacturing process, which produced almost 10 more versions.  He simply wanted to make a good product that would make it easier to wrap and unwrap cables.

Bill Porter - The Inspiration Behind the Name

The early years of the University of Miami's Music Engineering (MUE) program gave some lucky students the opportunity to learn from a legend.  Bill Porter, the originator of the 'Nashville Sound', shared his knowledge and insights with hundreds of students.

Bill would start off an introductory class to Recording Techniques by asking if anybody wanted to demonstrate how to wrap a mic cable.  Most knew nothing of the over/under method, choosing instead to wrap the cable around their elbow and hand.

After the admonishing cries from some of the older students had died down, he would, with a slight grin and a chuckle, then show the class the correct way.
